Wall Sconce Placement Guide

Wall sconces add layered light at eye level. Placement depends on the room and the shade design.

General mounting height

Most sconces are mounted with the center about 60 to 66 in above the floor, so the light source sits slightly above eye level.

Hallways and stairs

Space sconces roughly 8 to 10 ft apart along a hallway. On stairs, follow the rake of the stair so each sconce sits at a consistent height above the treads. Check the projection from the wall so it doesn't obstruct the walkway.

Bathrooms and vanities

Mounting a sconce on each side of the mirror, at about face height, reduces shadows. Bathroom locations have specific requirements; check that the fixture is suitable for the location and have it installed by a licensed electrician.

Bedside

For reading, mount about 48 to 60 in above the floor, or about 20 to 30 in above the top of the mattress, and slightly in from the bed edge.

Hardwired or plug-in

Hardwired sconces connect to a junction box in the wall and need professional installation. Plug-in sconces use a cord and outlet and are easier to fit in rentals.
