Chandelier Size Guide
A well-sized chandelier fills the space without overpowering it. These rules of thumb are a starting point; check each product's listed diameter and height before ordering.
Sizing to the room
Add the room's length and width in feet. The total is a good starting diameter in inches. For example, a 12 ft by 14 ft room suggests a chandelier around 26 in wide.
Sizing over a dining table
Choose a chandelier roughly one-half to two-thirds the width of the table, so diners don't bump it when standing up. For long tables, consider two smaller fixtures or a linear chandelier.
Hanging height
- Over a dining table: about 30 to 36 in from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture, on an 8 ft ceiling. Add about 3 in for each additional foot of ceiling height.
- In an open room or entryway: keep at least 7 ft of clearance from the floor to the bottom of the fixture.
- In a two-storey entry: hang so the fixture sits at or just below the second-floor window line.
Fixture height
A common guide is 2.5 to 3 in of fixture height for every foot of ceiling height. Taller ceilings can take a taller or multi-tier design.
