Lighting Buying Guide

Good lighting is layered. Most rooms need three kinds of light working together.

1. Ambient light

The main, overall light in the room: chandeliers and ceiling lights.

2. Task light

Focused light for reading, cooking and grooming: pendants over counters, table lamps and floor lamps.

3. Accent light

Light that adds depth and highlights features: wall sconces, spotlights and LED strips.

Before you buy

  • Measure the room and ceiling height.
  • Check the fixture's dimensions, weight and installation type.
  • Confirm the bulb base, voltage and whether it is dimmable.
  • For outdoor or bathroom use, check that the fixture is rated for the location.
